The Grey Rhino

For Dad...

The morning light illuminated a vast land, an open plain where light grass grew and isolated trees gave shelter for those who sought it. The air was musky and a light fog filled the place.

There, in the quiet morning, lay an old grey rhino. His body was both wrinkled as well as scarred - he had been through many struggles, but he continued to persevere and live. There were many others that this rhino touched, many lives he saved, many he inspired. The buzzards were already circling his body in the sky - they knew his minutes were counting down.

The old one drew in long breaths, though stopping for nearly a minute between his breathing. He was in pain, and every moment seemed like hours to him.

He just wanted to rest. He had seen plenty of the world, and his wisdom and experience was enough to be told countless stories from. He had done wonders in the world.

The birds above continued to wait for him to draw his last breath, but they were unaware that there were others in this land. Four other creatures arrived, knowing of the rhino's last moments.

An owl who loved him for many years - the two of them spent many days together. They protected each other - she kept him healthy while he defended her from predators. They were truly meant for each other.

A wolf who held him with great respect - he was taught discipline and strength from the old one, and looked up to him as a father. The wolf would be there with the rhino for many days, both surviving and both protecting one another.

A lemur who honored his wisdom - the young creature learned much of the ways of the world from the elder. He treasured the rhino's words and would value many lessons he was given.

And a stag who saw him as a guardian - he came to the rhino for protection, and the gentle creature would offer it freely.

:.{ land elsewhere : Rhye }.:

[=10]A hallway lit with candles. He peered around, then sighed and started down the long corridor. Rhye studied each candle as he passed it, wondering why they couldn't just use lights; they had them, after all. They were an important factor to the shows. But then, some insects had a habit of going too close to the lights. Sometimes, the electricity would modify their brains, do something that noone could really figure out. It made them go mad. Which was dangerous if the insects were poisonous.
Ugh. Insects.
Rhye stopped outside one of the many, many wooden doors, hesitating. Should he go in? Would he be caught? He glanced around a few more times, then knocked on the door very quietly. The brunette waited with bated breath, praying that noone else would see him, hoping that the door would open soon--and then it did. It swung backwards on its creaky hinges, making Rhye cringe much to the figure in the doorway's amusement. The raven-haired female giggled, and he glared at her in mock-irritance.
"Shush, this is no laughing matter! Let me in!" he growled, glancing over his shoulder. A slender hand clenched on the front of his poet's shirt, and then yanked him into the room. The door clicked shut behind them.
"You seem awfully edgy," the woman smirked, hand on her hip. "Do you ever wear normal clothes?"
"Normal, dear?" Rhye raised his eyebrows, glancing down at his poet's shirt and leggings. "No, not really. That would be boring, dear, and I'm in an entertainment business."
"So I look boring?" It was her time to raise her brows. Rhye chuckled.
"A little."
"Tch!" She hit him playfully in the chest. "Jeans and a T-shirt is normal."
"Boring."
The rest of the groups and dancers and singers working in the theatre were under the impression that Rhye was visiting this woman, whose name was Olivia, because he was romantically interested in her.
