Skinner's Log: Fawnhood- A Learning Curve

Skinner's picture

Day 8:
Today, I spent some time making a nice bed for myself in the birch forest- All day long, I patted down a little place where I could return to to sleep. But after I wandered away to find some berries.. I couldn't find it again! All that work...
But on the bright side, I learnt how to fly! It's just a hop, skip, and a jump off of a very big hill! I saw the grown ups doing it, and I fell a lot, but eventually I got my hooves off the ground- for a little while, at least...
As my old dad used to say- If at first yeh don't succeed, sit down an' have a cuppa.

Day 9:
Today I learnt how to 'walk' on water! I was following Big Blue Dag's doe-friend around, she has a very pretty white and black patterned coat and a mask that whistles. I tried that flying trick and managed, for a little while, to run just above the water.
O' Course we can't swim! Just because we're on a ship don't mean we like water...
Then I still fell in! The pond isn't so scary- and she, and another fellow with a scary skull face, a body with open sores, and big many-pointed antlers joined me as a frog for a while. He looked much more handsome when he kept his bones on the Inside!

Day 10:
I woke up today with a headache- It was right on the top of my head, between my ears. I couldn't even put flowers on me, it was so sore! I stayed in the circle of trees with the bowl in the center and big blueberry bushes, and hid under them, and fell asleep for the day.

Day 11:
My head was still hurting today, so I stayed in the bowl, only coming out to drink at the stream and eat some grass beneath a tall, thin tree. When I rubbed my back against it to scratch an itch, something fell right on the sore spot of my head! I looked down and saw a brown, crunchy thing. Naturally, I ate it. It tasted a bit dry. But I felt a tingly sensation in my hooves. Another fawn found me, and they looked at me hopefully, and told me to 'Cast the spell'. Cast the spell?! What madness was this! So they showed me how- a little jig, then a bow, and all this yellow light surrounded us until he had a big set of curly white antlers- like Big Blue Uncle Dag! And I had a pair of strange shiney yellow hollow horns, that made my calls louder! They soon wore off, and while the other fawn wanted to play some more, my head was still hurting. So I went back to the bowl and hid under the ferns, hoping my headache would go away.

Day 12:
Today I finally learnt to jump the stream. I danced with deer, mischievously turned a sleeper a different colour- What a wonderfully generous trick!
Ah-hah! What's this, my lady? A necklace? You didn't hand it in with the rest of the loot- Tell me, is it precious to you? Your late mothers, yeh say? In that case; yeh may keep it, with my complements!
I met Big Brown Uncle Virgil again, and his nice friend... I can't remember what his name was, but his Golden Name was shaped like something I think is familiar...
Looks like a little sloop, out there. Know how I know? Sloops look a bit like gravy boats, or stretched out teacups!
We all danced together, and ran around in the blue bowl where I have been sleeping. Virgil ate blueberries with me until his face was all purple! Mine was purple too. It took my mind off of my head.
I fell asleep there, then went to the pond to wash my face. I swam in the pond, today. I like being a frog. The water feels nice, but it's still a little scary.
You remember that first night? When the storm hit, an' I fell into the sea? That big, black... churnin' sea? I saw... I don't ever want to see what I saw down there, ever again...
I got out and fell asleep on the hill beside it, drying my fur out in the sun. My head is still hurting. I hope it stops hurting soon, it feels like my brain is going to burst out of my skull!

Day 13:
I woke up to my very first snowfall, today! I didn't know what to call it, I had to ask a very nice doe that was standing by the gods statues what it was called- the cold, flakey, crumbly things falling from the sky. Snow!
Naw, we'll head back to England now. I know some sailors fly south fer the winter, but me? I can't stay away from me family on Christmas. Can't miss that first bit o' snow...
Somehow it seems so very nice. I hope the trees aren't too cold now that snow is gathering on their bare limbs. I guess that's why they shake off their leaves in the autumn. It's slippery, and I fell on my rump a lot on the God's hill.
Steady on, Ellie! You'll slip runnin' like that! James, don't go out without yer boots on or mum'll skin yeh! Edward, go get the sled from the cellar, we're going to Uncle Harry's- He's got lots o' snow on his fields!
Me, the same doe with the bones-painted pelt, whistle mask and feathers, and a big stag with a red face, big white eyebrows, big white antlers, and a silver and black pelt, played the Turn Everyone White game. We all blended in with the snow! Then we sat down, and I took a nap. I very much liked spending time with them!
I found out why my head is so achey- I went and rubbed it against a tree when I was itchy- You won't believe this, but there are two lumps on my head! I'm a little frightened, I've never had lumps growing out of me before!
Ah! Collins, c'mere. I think I see some hairs on yer chin, boy! Good! Yer growin' to a fine young man. Now hoist that main line!
I also met the fearsome Collector! He didn't like it when I played around with his face while he was sleeping. I tried to follow him and make friends, but he ran from me. I think he's just lonesome, and never learned how to play nicely with others.
I also danced with a doe who I believe is called Noelle, who was playing with a stag, and using a tree to look like a big, long deer! It was nice to spend time with them. I notice, now, I'm getting bigger than some of the other, younger fawns. I sure hope so! I want to be a big strong grown up deer, soon!

Day 14:
The lumps have come out from under my fur. I can feel them when I move through bushes. They're hard, like bone. I tried to look at them in the pond, but I couldn't see to much. They seem to get bigger all the time- when I woke up this morning they were small, but, when I went to sleep in the after noon, I think they had gotten bigger. They don't hurt so much, though. They make my head wobbly.
I wish Wise Mummy was here to tell me what was happening. Are they going to become the big tall curly things on other deer? They all look so different- what will happen to mine?

I'm so confused. And just when I was beginning to understand the world...

Charlie is her first name. As

Charlie is her first name. As a fawn she commonly goes by that, although at this delicate stage of her life she doesn't remember it, nor even think of the concept of a name for herself. She hasn't ever formally introduced herself with a name.
When she regains her memory, She'll encourage people to know her as Skinner, and her friends can call her Charlie or Chuck. Deer who might need to fear her wrath will know her as Captain or Sir. >]
