Hello vulture culture friend.

Hello vulture culture friend. ;v; <3
I have a duck processing right now haha
thelittleraven's picture

Guys.

Guys. <3

Fox; A duck, eh? How are you processing it? I'm relatively new to this and never processed anything and only really know about maceration and dermestid beetles. What kind of duck, too?

It's been sitting in a bucket

It's been sitting in a bucket of water since last summer. Checked it last week. Think I gotta dump/sift it.
The bacteria in the water decomposes it well. Dermestid beetles are great! wish I had a colony. They do quick work.

It's a female Mallard duck. ovo I got some strange looks picking it up aha. Mostly get roadkill.
thelittleraven's picture

Yeah, to my knowledge you

Yeah, to my knowledge you have to dump the water rather frequently and replace it, since after a while it starts to become more corpse than water... haha. But yeah. I can't wait to see how it goes. I'd love a colony of beetles too, but I don't think my mother would approve, heh.

Never heard of a duck being roadkill, tho! Shame that happened to her. There are some ducks on my college campus that I was friends with last year. I don't know if they're still there, but they were delightful. They're pretty great creatures, weird and disgusting habits aside.

Vulture Culture, huh? I never

Vulture Culture, huh? I never knew it had a name. I've always been interested in collecting bones rather than the body, but I haven't gotten into it. I don't think my mother would like it much.
thelittleraven's picture

Hah, yeah. I once was keeping

Hah, yeah. I once was keeping a rat that my snake wouldn't eat, hoping that I could keep trying and he'd eventually eat it, but it died before I had the chance. I wanted to macerate it and keep the bones because rat skeletons are awesome, but mom was not at all thrilled. A shame, I think, but I'll always have the chance to do it some other time.

If you can, just go out in the woods and look around. Sometimes you'll find good things, small things that you can just sneak home and give a quick hydrogen peroxide bath to clean them and get rid of the smell.

Kind of gross and graphic, but just walking down the road with my friend once we found a group of vultures swarming something, and when we approached we found it was a dead dog. Unfortunately it had a collar so it had been someone's pet, and from the look of things he'd been hit by a car. It was sad, but we were super excited because this was a huge find and the bugs and the vultures could clean it for us. A few days later we came back and it had dried up pretty considerably because it was Tennessee in July, and while we couldn't take off the head like we wanted, we made off with a rib and a scapula. I don't know what happened to the body after that, since my friend never went back to it and now lives in a different state.

Also in my friend's collection were some bones that I can't remember, a part of a turtle shell, and a rabbit... feeeemur? Might have actually been part of the pelvis but I can't recall exactly. On that day we also retrieved some spicebush swallowtails, we think, that had died from the heat along the road.

Sorry for geeking out on you, hah, I just love this stuff. I can't wait 'til I can start my own collection.

Ooo, Vulture Culture. I

Ooo, Vulture Culture. I didn't know it was called that either.
I've got a tiny collection. A vole skull, and a random vertebrae from some small animal. Also some leaf fossils I found in my next door neighbor's backyard, though I'm not sure if that counts. XD

I practically live in the

I practically live in the woods. There's probably some rat or mice skeletons around left by the feral cats here. I'll have to go check sometime, though this might be the best time while it's still cool and the snakes are hiding.

I loved the geeking out. Your story was very interesting. I wouldn't mind to read more if you have any.

Once, I had actually found a separated bird's wing, didn't know where the body was, the poor thing. I kept it and hid it for a while, but I don't remember what happened to it. Probably was found and thrown out. The only thing I have now is an intact clam from the lake nearby, but I don't know if that really counts either.

Look at this stuff, isn't it

Look at this stuff, isn't it neat? Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?

Only been doing this for a couple years now, Jin and I's collection combined, minus her Moose cow skull... Got a couple more sheep soaking still, too. And hoping for a more complete Red Deer Skull + Antlers next month. c:
If you can do it, it's pretty rewarding!

Hah. I have to say, that is a

Hah. I have to say, that is a really neat collection, Vee. What kind of bird is that in the first picture? Is that a Green Heron skull? Also, do I spy a bumblebee in the box?

Grey Heron. c: Dag gave it to me after a work clean out... And yes that's a Bumblebee, lol.

@thelittleraven - YEAH my mom

@thelittleraven - YEAH my mom wouldn't like them, either haha.

Yes, it had a broken neck and wing. ;o; they are very pretty~ ehehe
I'll have to take a picture of my collection, too. ouo

EDIT: http://sta.sh/217va7phy9b1 Here it is. :0 biggest skull is a bear.

So many more vultures here than I thought! I'm happy, hehe. It inspires me to see your collections.

Today I had planned to go

Today I had planned to go searching for fish and ended up being handed two deer skulls. Was going to get a beaver skull as well, but I was pulled away.

Thank you. Yeah it does. I'm just being a bit lazy at the moment. Also forgot to get more hydrogen peroxide. I'll have to do that tomorrow.

Hello. Thank you for your

Hello. Thank you for your kind words again. Is nice to meet you. I feel like in all games i ever played there is always that feeling when I played too much. Its like energy loss and increasing reluctance to so much as enter an app/game. Same goes with watching and listetning to music. I hope you will find a way out of your slump, if I may call it a slump, if you havent yet. Wishing you all best.

You're quite welcome! It's always a pleasure to help out new members, and nice to meet you too. Yeah, I get burnout pretty easily if I don't watch myself. I'm slowly working my way out of it, at least. Ryff's been up and about since the night and fog set in, oddly enough. Usually that's not weather she'd make herself very apparent to play in, hah. But it feels good to feel up to playing the game and exploring the different weather. Thank you!
