"He had grown up in greens and browns, burnt sienna on a backdrop of summer.

He had learned the secrets... The trails of deer and rabbit, wound tightly through heavy branches and roots.

Here, where the trees are not growing, but growing old.

Sometimes, he goes out after dark to shimmer with night lights.

Coyotes circle and disappear, laughing their hullos.

He is lulled by the whip-poor-will and wakes to the blackbirds, or the jay tapping, always knocking on the river-stones.

The fog makes islands out of trees.

Outside the fog, there is nothing."

Hototo is a poet, and his voice it two toned and melodic. He is slow to speak, which he will do so in riddle or prose. Aside from when Hototo quotes another great poet, to whom he will always give credit, the prose is original and orchestrated of course by the human behind the deer. Sometimes his words may reflect what is going on in my world. Glean what you will.

    March 5, 2014:

    ::On spellcasting::
    You, slumbering stranger,
    you speak to me with silence;
    a mute canvas.

And so I will paint you in glory
    unspoken. A swan
    befits your mystery.

He who is unknown, is known to us.
Reveal your elegance and be reborn.

    March 4, 2014:

There is a silence that speaks to a knowing
of things past and things yet
    unraveled.
    Untraveled paths; root riddled.

    Bloodroot for my body.
    Spiderwort for my spirit.
    Mugwort for my dreams.

Junebeetle speaks the way is treacherous.
Sowbug quips the way is through.
    Firefly says nothing.
Now I know what I must do.

    A forgotten Time:

    *Hibernating* :::Two Dreams:::

    Of Falling into sleep:

Inhale... The light has scattered, leaving a space to dream.
Perhaps this final shadow is meant to explain why
    and then I understood.

I thought "blurr" as if the one word would do it
silouhetting the day with scent, smudging time in mind
    just enough to slip.

    I thought "I am a ghost"
That's why yesterday was shoved into tomorrow and forgot where it was going
and why, when it comes I am going to disappear, maybe.

And why I wake up at night
to find out who's been tapping at the riverstones
who's been there... and never is.

    I walk in sleep
and dreams they finally stop drumming,
    instead they break through.

I tell myself "we are not lost" in the middle of reality
to remind myself of how I know the secret
    -behind- the sun.

    And someone's watching.
I hear my name in the voices of strangers
I hear my name in the voices of friends, and I crumple.

When light returns and suffocates the sleep
    will I be alive?
Or will I find it's only begun?

Will I sing to you of rain
as if yesterday had dropped out of somewhere and cracked the sky?
    That's how it all started.

The stars explode my beating heart
and the one that fell was my last ride home.
"so smile now" (Is this my own thought?)

    -==========================-

Of surfacing, of a struggle to wake:

    And this is the breaks
Where the atmosphere unfolds and is rendered paper thin.

Rising, I make love to the sun
with my blind and piercing stare.

    I watch the horizon because
once I heard that home is right there... Only one step past the line ( no no no) cut
to part us from here and far away.

    from here and far away.
far away, far away, even farther.

    Here is far away.
far away, far away, far away, even farther.

Parting Far away and far away and far away and far away and far away... even farther.

... To make distance palpable and nearness intangible.

    I have a sleeping sickness
and I have a crush on the end of the world.

Because that is the catch where my breath escapes
    stealing me to edges

    and far away

    even farther.

(Why can I not wake up?)

    A forgotten Time:

    : Stranger - :::A Waking Dream:::

The sky is filled with birds. The whole forest has taken flight.

Why do they make no sound? It is because they are falling.

Someone has set the sky on fire; blue blazed over in a romance only angels dare...

And the Ruin bells toll out the warning. "Here is now and now is cascading."

I realize now I am not alone. Behind me is a thin line, a cut in peripheral vision.

Is it far away? Or a hairs breadth behind me? I do not look. I am afraid it may see me.

I cannot focus. Like a star, hung from high places, constellation blinded.

All I see is shadow, Illuminating nothing. Or is it a light sucking in on
    itself?

I lay out amongst the crushed leaves. Leaves make patterns.

I breath, I hold my breath. This is what it feels like to be
    K A L I D O S C O P E D.

I am the color blue. (not me not me not me)

I fill my lungs with places I once had forgotten and remember once...

I was a fawn and once I could vanish.

    Just once.

    A forgotten time:

    Mockingbird

You have turned into a lovely bird
    and carried me away.
    Carry you away...

I am a carnation dream and I have seen those eyes before...

And now I know I love her
My love, she has those eyes.

    Amaranthine eyes.
    Blue sky
    storming eyes.

And I want to run away
    hooves pounding
    heart beating

eyelashes reflecting sunlight over wild eyes.

    A forgotten time:

    Rain :::A Waking Dream:::

    This is a secret...
I want to shelter lovers... and enemies.

I want to entertain the chance to make mistakes.

I am still watching over you. I am still here,
breathing quietly beside you in the night.

Though, you may not see me.

You may not see me because it is dark.
It is dark because I swallowed the sun.

If I were to sing, perhaps it would slip out.

I hold the dawn in my mouth, under my tongue.
I suck on it like a drop of fruit...

and it tastes like rain. Always like rain.

And the strong stag trumpets and kicks the dirt and the smell of musk and black earth sulfuric electricity static in my mind. The smell of damp weeds in his maw, and sage soft sickly sweet drawing burnt lines in my eyes, leaving ash in my heart.

Here is now and I can see the sunrise RED on my horizon and I slip into a state of awe and become like how (I REMEMBER MY FATHER).

I miss him. My strength is bright and stubborn. (sulferhearts) I have it in my blood, buzzing beautiful born into it like him... I am him.

I am saffron like blood, like crimson laced in gold.

We are led to believe a lie

Biography
Hototo: "Whistling Ghost"
Coat/Crown/Countenance: Owl/Poppies/Weeping Idol
Gender: Stag
Age: Adult
Scent:Poppies, Live earth (mossy wormy rich and dark), Tannic oak (bitter, dry, repels pests)
Language: Prose.
Voice:Throat singing -

The Poet is Reborn

Hototo has reappeared in the forest. No one seems to know where he had been, not even the trees. Long ago, his
sleeping form was consumed by the leaf litter and presumably, had nourished the soil. The birds say the earth was
sunken in the place where he had lain, the bullfrog sings that Hototo had risen in the night and passed unseen through
the fog. None of that is of any consequence now, the forest needed to forget, as all things go in nature, he was consumed either
in body, or spirit. However, when memory finally lets go and releases its grip on the past, there is rebirth.

Familiar

Individuals Hototo can mostly identify in-forest. Mostly.

Mockingbird: "Three pines" - An old friend from before his disappearance, has yet to reconnect. Hototo has uneasy and complex feelings of loss for her.
Poe: "Her soul" - A new friend and inspiration. Hototo feels she is a kindred spirit.

Keeping an eye out for:

Individuals Hototo is curious about, but may not always recognize. Prepare to be stalked.
Flora: "Chalice"

Other Information

Favored haunts: Poppy fields. Hototo will be found there when composing his thoughts.

Peculiar habits: Hototo is a sleepwalker and will often be found interacting with things unseen. Or walking slowly in a fugue-like state. (walking backwards)

Toya, can I ask you, is there something in your signature?? I think you have something there that messes up the comment structure and coding. Can you change it? It's making a mess of my bio page, lol. xD

Edit: I realized what the problem is, it's that your sig code is too long, I'm guessing because you're using flash in your sig. If you put the picto's as just normal pictures instead the problem is gone Smiling Do you know how or shall I help you?

Signatures can only be so long, so likely you had typed that >, but because it was too long, the site removed it itself. It is best, to upload your pictures to a website like Tinypic.com, because they give you very small urls. Or perhaps, make one picture out of your two pictograms! That shortens it a lot too Smiling

I think we've seen that picto before, hello! I like how you go about character development, just letting things happen.

I met you earlier tonight! Unfortunately it'd be Zyzzy's nature to run after such an unusual fawn in the forest...(I also hadn't read your whole bio yet, where it said Hototo dislikes being approached too fast o___o sorry) I hope I didn't seem too creeperish sitting/sleeping next to him at the playground.
Toya's picture

Oy my forest has been glitchy

Oy my forest has been glitchy all night!

Was I even awake? I was very frustrated with the game and had walked away. I wish I had seen you.

I did hang out later with a few deer, but didn't do much other than spar a tree. Were you there? Many of the pictos in the game have not been working for me tonight, so I had no way to easily identify anyone. Sad

Zyzzy's picture

You were awake at first... I

You were awake at first... I saw you running around the Oak tree and ran after you(what I apologized for. I figured Hototo didn't appreciate that, but you probably didn't even see me with the game problems), lost you at the playground, but found you sleeping there awhile later and sat down. If you saw a grey deer with red flowers in their antlers, it was me. Sucks that the game's messed up right now Sad Bleh. Oh well, we'll meet another time!
Toya's picture

Yeah, I think I couldnt see anyone. For a while I was logged in and it said there were 50 players, but I saw an empty forest. You were likely invisible to me. There will always be a next time!

That. story. is. adorable. I actually based his personality a little off of Eleven(and Ten, 'course), and I can see him in that story, dancing around for only Hototo to see xD
Glad we met for-real that time around! And that Hototo likes Zyzzy. ^__^

Mockingbird peeked around the

Mockingbird peeked around the corner of a tree at the older fawn. Stealth wasn't exactly an asset that she had, as she had a rather colourful pelt that popped from the forest's shades of olive and dust. Her ears swiveled and she leaned out farther to better spy on the buck, until she lost her balance and fell in a heap beneath the tree. "Oops."
Toya's picture

*Hototo, who had been

*Hototo, who had been lounging and nibbling at poppy petals, came to attention at the distinctive crunch of brush behind him. He turned his head only slightly, but pivoted his ears backwards, trained on the spot where the faunett now lay. From the corner of his eye, her colors caught the light, betraying her location as well.

His heart beat a bit quickly as he wondered who she might be. He liked that she might have been spying, and though her vibrant pelt may have drawn attention, it certainly did catch the light as pretty as any poppy.

He lifted his nose to the air and sniffed a bit over-dramatically, but aside from his ears, he tried to pretend as if he didn't know she was there...*

(Have you got a bio for your Mockingbird I might read?)

She was still trying to be a

She was still trying to be a spy, although she knew he was certainly on to her at this point. Instead of getting up, she just lay in the dust, watching him curiously. What a well-kept fawn. He seemed rather handsome, from a distance.

After more than a few bugs had crawled past her face and really creeped her out, she rose and shook out a blue-and-black pelt.

"Alright, that didn't quite work out..." Mockingbird circled around to the side of the fawn before approaching. She stopped a few feet away. "Hi. Sorry for spying on you. I was a bit curious."

(She's more or less a reflection of myself, but I have a personal blog that you can check out for some basic personality information.)
Toya's picture

*Hototo let the stillness

*Hototo let the stillness settle for a moment. Just as he had begun to mouth at a few more poppy petals the fawn stepped into his view from the side and he regarded her kindly as she made her approach.

At her pause he stood and flicked his tail behind him cheerfully.

She spoke and his withers shook with something of a chuckle in reply.

He took one step forward, but abruptly stooped to snatch up a petal, and deftly place it on her nose.

This was terribly funny to the fawn, and he flashed a child-like but devilishly charming smile*

Mockingbird was just about to

Mockingbird was just about to ask why he wasn't talking to her, but the shaking of withers and a single step forward made her lose her train of thought. "What are you...? Erm. I see I have to use deer-speak with you, heehee." She giggled.

She peeked down at what he was doing, only to be suprised by a red poppy petal floating onto her nose.

Mouth slightly agape, she looked at him with bewilderment. What a smile. She smiled as well and went cross-eyed, staring at the petal as she blew it off of her face with her mouth, where it floated down and landed on his forehead.

Mock stuck her tongue out at the stranger. "You're funny. What's your name?"
Toya's picture

*Hototo held perfectly still

*Hototo held perfectly still as he watched the petal return to him so skillfully. It landed right between the starts of what would eventually become his first set of antlers. His absent minded movements entirely ceased as he wanted it to stay there.

So, now perfectly still, he regarded her for a moment in thought at her request for his name. Hmmn.

He -=very very slowly and carefully=- scraped three lines in the soft earth, much like the three lines that ran down his forehead, then he pressed his hoof down to adorn two of the lines with a pair of circles.

As he did this, he had begun to... sing?

His voice revealed why he did not speak. It was harmonic. (Throat singing) a hauntingly beautiful melodic call that seemed to at once surround them and lilt away from them unnaturally, perhaps to echo like a ghost in some other part of the forest...

He did not notice his failure to keep the petal still until it fell down onto the scribble, and at that, his voice cracked and he fell silent with a little grunt.*

Mockingbird watched intently

Mockingbird watched intently as the buck began to draw in the dirt, seeing the name and scanning it over several times to memorize it. She looked up and gave him a nod, and that's when she became aware of the singing.

She was silent, simply gawking at him in utter amazement. Blue-grey eyes grew wide and curious, ears swiveled forward and head tilted. What a beautiful song.

She flinched slightly when he faltered and stopped. "That was very nice. I liked that."

After that, she turned so that her side was facing him and showed him the dark navy piece of cloth draped over her back, almost like a saddle. In the center of it was a gold emblem depicting a box with a diagonal cut and three lines.

"That's my name, but they also call me Mockingbird."

Hototo lowered his forehead

Hototo lowered his forehead to gently brush against the cloth, creating symmetry between the three lines embroidered there, and the three lines upon his brow.

He flashed another smile and seemed pleased with her name.

He did cant his head curiously at the cloth itself though, mouthing it a bit, and trying to catch a scent of where it may have come from. In fact, he swung his nose to her withers and swiveled his ears about, he wondered where Mockingbird had come from too.

She turned her head to look

She turned her head to look at him, otherwise motionless. She smiled back and waggled her tail. Her eyes lit up. Now that they knew eachother's names, they could properly be friends!

As he sniffed at the cloth on her back and her withers, she did the same to him. He would find that she smelled somewhat like the dusty smell of a well-groomed, powerful horse, mixed with the fainter scent of periwinkle flowers. She investigated his withers and back, wondering the same as he.
Toya's picture

Hototo twitched his tail as

Hototo twitched his tail as they exchanged a much more familiar greeting. He noted that even though she was small, she smelled strong, and he wondered if she would grow into a tall, proud doe. He lifted his head and laid it across her back on top of the cloth for a moment. He thought she was nice.

Hototo himself carried the scent of mossy live earth, tannic oak, musk, and a faint lingering of something sickly sweet and foreign.

After she had the opportunity to note his own scent he stepped back and tapped the ground lightly before circling in one spot. There he laid back down among the poppies and gave complete focus to the faunett still standing beside him.

Since their last meeting as fawns, she had lost her voice, but she had retained everything else. The memory of Hototo, of his name and his wordless voice, and she wanted to see him again now that they were growing up some, to see how he was maturing.

Silently, the now predominantly blue Roe deer trotted through the forest, in search of her friend.
