You are... - Memories

The sun was bright, golden rays that slipped past the protective canopy above. There was a slight chill to the air, it was late October so that was to be expected. Or maybe it was the forest preparing itself for the coming of the Dark Lord.

However, I luckily had yet to encounter any darkness on this fine day, though I did not know it was going to follow soon...

I pranced through the forest, chasing the butterflies and the squirrels, letting the bright sunlight warm my white pelt. The air was crisp and my breath left a smokey fog as I called out across the forest, to tell all where I was. I lifted my head high, ears pricked forward, strained against my pole as I listened for any returned calls. There was only one. It came from closer to the large old oak.

I trembled and shook myself off, moving toward the tree slowly. The shadows cast lay long over the forest floor, beating away the warmth and comfort of the sun above. I slowed, then finally stopped, gazing ahead at the base of the tree where an old stag stood. I lowered my head slowly, breathing out again before my nares flared, taking in a deep breath. He did not seem to be a foe. I crept forward, lowering my head and bowing down to him in greeting. I did not know how he would respond, so I stepped back, waiting.

He turned toward me, eyes red, or so they appeared. I felt my body tremble, and I cringed back away from him in fright. He roared, lowering the great set that adorned his scalp. I quickly backed away, almost falling over my own hooves in my desperate attempt to get away. He did not pursue, merely turned back to where he stood over a sleeping deer that I could now see hidden half behind one of the edges of the dead oak.

I lowered my head sadly, the memories flickering through my mind of running alone, hooves flailing behind me as the large stag had attacked. I turned away.

The forest surrounded me, keeping me in the darkness of the leaves. The pace I was moving at I do not believe could be even called a walk. Trudging maybe. I was trudging, hooves dragging over the soil and thin grass at my feet. I stopped and lowered my head sadly, calling out. This time, no one answered. I trudged on through the forest....

When I looked up I had neared the ruins, my head tilting slowly though I did not care where I walked. I had been turned away by yet another deer, the fourth one in such a short time... I slowed a little ways from the tree that harbours the mushrooms and lifted my head, listening for any who I might know, might be able to run to for comfort.

Head falling low, I trembled and shook my head. No one I knew were around, they were all still with the gods. I lifted my head slightly as I heard hoof falls, looking back over my shoulder toward the ruins. Surprise flickered through my eyes, spotting the small herd of five or so deer who were bounding and dancing around the ruins.

One had approached, head tilted as she watched me. I turned slowly toward her and lowered my head shaking it slowly again. I wasn't very happy, though it was nice to know that someone cared. When I looked up the other deer had also turned toward me and were watching.

I turned my attention back to the one who was coming forward again. The colour of the peacock graced her hide, a white mask with a smile hid her face from view. Long white antlers came from her pole, I assumed she was dressed up for Halloween. She lowered her head also to be level with mine, tilting it slowly to the side

"What's the matter?"

I glanced slightly away before looking back to her "I am just having a bad day..."

She lifted her head and walked the short distance between us, nuzzling my side and neck gently "It's alright, come, play with us?" It was an offer, an invite to return to the warmth of the sun from the shadows.

I lifted my head slowly, nodding "I guess so, I suppose I don't have much else to do. My name's Kita"

She nodded and fell back in laughter before she started toward the small group, looking back toward me "Great! My name's Fran"

I followed, gazing over toward her, tail flicking slowly, blue-green eyes soft as I smiled slowly. This doe had broken me out of the shadows, the forest spilling into light. She was my own personal sunlight.

"Fran.....it's a pleasure to meet you"
