The Light in the Darkness

A nightmare of Talla's. It's quite shaken her, actually. Odd behaviour can probably be partially related to this.
This was also a reason to get writing again.
May be a bit confusing, but it's a dream, so that's a given.

Everything was dark. So dark that even the night time vision of a deer was hopeless against the oppressive dark. It wasn’t a moonless night kind of dark, but rather the dark one would associate with the bottom of the ocean. The only consolation was the firm surface given to stand upon; however even this could not be trusted for it was impossible to see where it dropped off at any point. A single step could send her hurtling downward.

Perhaps forever.

She looked up. Well, in the direction that should be upward at least. Through one’s eyes, it was impossible to tell, and only the rotation of her head’s position gave a clue as to the direction. Not even the air seemed to stir – managing to further disorientate.

Not a sound, not a shift was made. Then, as if replying to the fear that gripped her legs and held them steadfast, a golden light slowly shone into existence. It radiated brightly against the otherwise total ebony existence. Slowly, it was evident that the luminous source was not content to stay as it was, despite the resemblance to a star it held.

More it grew, stretching and expanding within the abyss. A shape emerged from its odd contortions, which had held a strange aspect of elegance as it elongated. Oddest of all, it appeared to be made of a collection of symbols held together by an unseen force. As the shape continued to form into a creature that bore an impressive crown, the doe finally found herself recognising the material.

Pictograms.

All those whom she had ever trusted, had ever loved, made up the magnificently shining body. So many that had been held with the highest love she could fathom shone brightest of all and appeared to cluster within the brilliance of the glowing form’s antlers.

Her eyes strained, slight figure tilted forward. An attempt to distinguish one magnificent glow from another that was only partial in its success. Until it began to move, of course. And then a language of names rippled as if part of an ocean with each sway and step.

It was all that she trusted made into a beacon of light. Yet still she did not move. Despite the longing to immerse herself within its great body, not a muscle moved, not a hair stirred upon her figure. Struck with awe, it would seem, as she stood stead as the mass accelerated. Entirely trusting as it came rocketing for her.

Legs did not make proper contact with the ground, nor was a single sound made. Even as the distance closed, the course did not change and those symbols which had been given heart and soul did not falter for a moment. Not as its head dropped or rose once more with a doe upon them. Not as she cried out, the glowing shapes penetrating skin, flesh and bone. Only when the head tipped forward suddenly and the antlers released her did it stop. No blood mingled with the purity of those pictograms, and no blood seeped from the wounded doe upon the expressionless ground. Yet still she heaved, cringed and cried in what must have been agony. As if something that was her very core had been torn from her in that motion.

It stood over her. No face to show expression and no language through body made to compensate. Shiny brightly were symbols of kindness and safety, friendship and love. And it merely faced the broken doe, the vibrant glow emitted did not fall upon her, however. The floor upon which they stood was bathed in what could be described as pure sunlight whilst avoiding every muscle and hair of its victim.
A last effort was made. Mask cracking as her eyes glanced upon the one who had crafted it, butterflies entirely absent as that one stared down from antlers too. The hardships and triumphs mattered no longer, for now they had turned upon her. And yet, perhaps it was a misunderstanding.

Eyes searched, looking for once among the many that would apologise. Eyes pleading as her mind crumbled, her body managing to shudder violently.

And the answer was simple.

It raised one awkwardly formed leg only as much as needed and in one motion brought it downward.

Swiftly and without effort.

And the pictogram shattered beneath it. No longer did a floor hold her, and she fell. Her name was now mere fragments as it plummeted with her. It did not join the mass that now stood above. Not falling as she did.

No. It simply descended with her. Without a spark, without a glow, both fell.

Every moment they were torn farther from the only light.

One that didn’t touch them anyway.
