I've been feeling nostalgic for the past few days and looking through old posts on TEFc, and after a conversation with AA, we started to wonder if people would still remember aspects of the 'old' TEF, the way it was before roughly halfway through 2009, before things started to change. So we pretty much decided to make a blog with 'An old TEFer would remember these...' and then a list. It'd be awesome if people could help out with that, maybe share some of your old times.
Remember these?
- Drupal. Goddamn DRUPAL. Don't even talk to me about Drupal. |8
- Walter and 21
- Her, Fayne, Sarie, Raku, Fenqua, Trinket...
- Lieka and her many, many deer
- The old TEFc layout
- Deer didn't have to be realistic, and there were almost no 'feral' deer
- When gay stags were a serious minority and not all over the place
- The start of a flow of 'aggressive' deer, which many didn't take kindly to
- When the skulldeer started to creep up
- Artistic appearances were much simpler and more Endless Forest-y, mostly just what you saw inforest with a few original quirks
- There were very few canine or non-cervine characters, and those that were made were usually frowned upon at first
- Relationships between deer were much simpler. There was a lot less roleplaying involved; you could spend a week inforest with someone and just know your character loved them.
- Mates having fawns was very rare
- The Rut didn't exist
- There was less drama really, but when there was drama, it was blown out of proportion every time, and it was usually about things we accept as normal now
- The community site had 'dead hours', where you'd literally spend about 3 hours just waiting for a new post
- Everyone pretty much knew eachother
- Having more than two deer was quite rare for a while
- People would write stories involving other people's characters, if they requested
- If you posted something about sex, you'd be LYNCHED. If I (Dannii) had posted 'kid's games' three years ago, I would have been murdered for it.
- When the update blogs started, oh god.
- Everyone used to post memes and quizzes all the time
- You could post whatever the hell you liked. The front page wasn't full of biographies/roleplays/etc.
- There was no CSS
- Sluggs and his glitches!
- Sometimes you'd log on and there would be about five deer inforest, all of them asleep
- Minis were very rare

Personally I prefer how it is now- but only because it has come a good way.
There are aspects that will be missed, but at least it hasn't gone off its rocker, hehe.

What I remember was the 'character' thing- suddenly biographies everywhere and a lot of Rps started popping up.
I miss it so much, being able to walk up to someone without the fear of being rejected. :c

As an old TEFer, I'd remember
The Gods would come into the Forest to actually play with other deer.
When you'd be lucky to see 10+ deer at an ABIOGENESIS.
When the BZD randomly appeared in-Forest in the middle of spring.
When the official ToT forums were all we needed for communication.
Nem and Lizardfish would roflcopter around the Forest.
Cyric was the first to get the entire zombie set at the first Forest Halloween event.

I remember with the old layout that every time someone updated their blog, it would bump up to the top of the posts or something. (I'm not 100% sure.). I am so happy that does not happen now |:

The thing about the deer designs...so true. All my deer were so simple and lacking in anything too stylized...Darcy especially. They still are, actually...But I am fond of a lot of the newer designs ^^
I miss all the stories people used to write. Inspired me to write a little of my own...but now I have no motivation. People don't seem to read them anymore.
I liked that the community was small enough that the whole forest could participate in plots without having to 'sign up' for it or write permission to be involved >< Anyone could jump in...Now even the smallest events are chaotic.
I do like that there's more role playing now though...I just wish it were friendlier and more 'open' like before.

My first deer ever wasn't a mini, and so I can remember being really shocked that minis even existed. There was one that always slept in mushroom circles and sometimes woke up to spellspam people- For some reason I think his name was Lemon; but never found them on the community.

Glad to be getting to know this community very much over this last while of participation with the forums, although I've got to admit, it's strange now having "language" involved in the forest. It's completely changed the dynamic. It's really nice to be able to say some of the things you just couldn't get across otherwise, but I did like having only those buttons. You learn so much about ppl, man XD
Anyways, tangeant, sorry, and I know all y'all old school forum ppl are like "pshhhhh whatchooknowwwww" XD

When I first started I thought the Skull mask was a super special item (bonus: for some reason I thought those that had them were the game's staff, I don't know why I thought that), barely anyone had it.
There was a super old drama about someone thinking they saw a deer with wings inforest, I think someone photoshopped a screenshot or something. I never saw said screenshot just the aftermath posts.
That House that appeared in the birch forest during Halloween one time and never again.
When M and A would make weekly appearances inforest.
The most on would be about 15 to 20 deer during peak time.
You know the connection was iffy when you were trying to connect and had an unchanging 37 deer on (that also didn't match the number on the livemap) ingame before pictos had spread.
Super old drama over whether or not our deer should have mates.
Predator deer? What were those?
You didn't have to worry about getting lynched for peacocking a deer. I don't think anyone peacocks anymore.
Having actual characters was rare and people mostly played ooc-ly.
You could sit and play with anyone.
"Fandeer" were everywhere. I don't think anyone has any anymore. I'm only aware of Helel's (Jareth and Bucky and Keith).
When it was only Sluggs that knew how (and had permission!) to do his glitches.

I feel so silly playing Alice whose set is her design nowadays, it's annoying to feel out of place like that. I do remember a handfull of these. My biggest memory of the time I joined was that huge fear of falling into the pond and loosing my precious set I'd tried so hard to get- and the spellsaver never worked for me. : (

I still have Draak and Chime who's designs are basically their inforest sets. Corvus is now a sort of (unless the BAN pelt was permanent) because he's gone so dark, and Kostya teeters between being ingame set based and not.
Both my ooc deer designs are "ingame" too (except for Three's face; it's a kirinface).
My inactive deer; Cirrus and Aura are also in the "appearance is same as ingame" club.
(And then ??? and Jehoel toss the ingame thing out the window. I made them as such to get used to the idea of having said designs inforest.)

Everyday I would come home from school, hop in Forest and have a bunch of deer run over and say 'Hi'. Running herds was fun too. Nowadays the only herd Walter has following him are mobs trying to lynch him.

embarrasingHetalia fandeer back in the day. I think a few people had Kingdom hearts deer too, but I can't remember who had who.It's actually really interesting to see fan-deer become near non existant because IT and FH are filled with them, I would have thought TEF'd follow suit.

Some time ago I decided to look back at some really old blogs. Personal interest to see if the community and game were different. And I can definitely see where most of those points come in. The lack of bio's, the simplicity of bio's, the simplicity of characters, the amount of blogs just of screenshots and people expressing how much fun they had with so and so, where art posts outnumbered bio's, more fan characters, more ooc interaction, the list goes on.
I would have loved to actually see what it was like years ago, but I don't think I'd change anything about how the community and game is now, except maybe more forest events because damn M & A doing something every week must have been awesome.
