The memories lay beneath the dust, covered by the sandy soil and the pine needles...
They had once been golden, shining bright, but now, beneath the dust, they were dull and pallid...
For the doe who bore them had sunk beneath the earth, as well; her crusted face laid against the dirt, crushing what little brightness there was left in the memories...
She sank deeper and deeper, pushing the memories and herself further and further away...
But then he came, her beloved warrior in bones, who pulled and helped her onto her feet...
He uttered four words, just four little words. And the sweet little words called upon the rain...
The rain soaked and washed the dust away. The rain polished and stroked the memories, and returned the brightness to their shells...
The memories split, and from their depths rose the fresh golden stalks of Now, beautiful and strong...
For the first time, the doe opened her eyes to the beauty of the world, saw herself, and saw that she, too, was beautiful...
And the sad, frightened little doe will walk with a brighter smile on her face, and her tears will be of joy.
