Perhaps we have forgotten...

Pegasicorn's picture
...that auto-playing music is not allowed on this site.

And yet what do we find?

Auto-playing music.

At least there's a pause button.

Oh, but what's this? Invisible music players you say? So that we have no control over the music whatsoever?

This is poor form. (I know this link talks about guidelines on creating a website, but writing a blog on here is like creating a webpage. Not all that different.)

This blog will be deleted if needless arguments are started.

And then it will be reposted.

+1 support. I hope no one

+1 support. I hope no one takes it personally: after all, in its own secret way, autoplay hurts even the people who use it. I know I'm at least 30% less likely to check a blog that I know has autoplay, and 75% percent less likely to comment, even if otherwise I'd want to. But then again, that's just me.

Oooopsie... Shocked *Goes and turns off auto playing music* Sorry you guys I didn't know that it wasn't allowed and that people do not like it.

Edit: WTF my auto playing music won't seem to turn off. Can someone check on Ashaki's bio and see if it is still auto playing?

It's just it was stressed so

It's just it was stressed so much when I took web design not to put music visitors can't stop, so I cringe whenever I see (or rather, don't see) music you can't stop. And we were told not to do it, so.. *shrug* If at least to avoid getting in trouble, there should be no auto-play.

@Madgab: Guess it's a good thing I posted this then, since you weren't aware. Others might not know either.
It's ok, though. This isn't directed at any one person. Just a general FYI.
EDIT: It should be in the coding for the music player. Look for "autoplay=true" and change it to "autoplay=false".

I'm sorry what? dealwithitplease. Not everyone is going to listen to what you want all the time.

But not everyone wants to

But not everyone wants to have unpausable autoplaying forced into their ears.
Nobody said you'd have to listen to our music, because it doesn't play automatically. I do believe you've missed the point of this post?

And there are some people who pay money for internet bandwidth. Such autoplaying music that can't be stopped wastes money that could be of better use.

Pegasicorn's picture

@KingEnvy: Would you say that

@KingEnvy: Would you say that to Auriea, one of the creators of this game, who is the one that wrote that blog saying no auto-playing music allowed?

I just don't like how big the players are. I usually resize mine to 10x10, so if you hover over it, the little finger should pop up and you should be able to pause it (or at least I was able to pause it quickly).

I do hate completely invisible ones though. However, I'm not going to yell at them to delete it, as long as it's under the "read more" section.

Is music that begins to play

Is music that begins to play on its own all right if the "pause" button is visible in the post?

At least being able to pause

At least being able to pause it is good. I understand not wanting to show the video portion ever since YouTube went stupid saying they don't like the music players that cut out the video.
It's good to give viewers control.

-headdesk- I'm so glad you

-headdesk-

I'm so glad you said something or else I would.
Auriea asked EVERYONE to please refrain from having autoplay music period.
Making it invisible does not make it okay.
It still can freeze people's browsers if they are running the forest at the same time or have an old computer.

I find it very annoying when I am searching deer bios to read up on them in forest and instead am staring at a blank white non responding page because the owner decided to be cute and have a 1x1 pixel that stream obnoxiously loud death metal.

I like to have music available if I am casually browsing bios. I normally search the page for the player and activate it.

I do not like having my computer seize up and loud music disrupting the room because someone felt themselves to be above the creators of the game and that their deer is special enough to deserve to warrant disobeying the polite request to stop.

There is no reason why you need to have your music starting up automatically.
It's just a nuisance and makes you appear very disrespectful.

I'm so glad you posted about

I'm so glad you posted about this. But I have a question... I'm genuinely confused by this. Is autoplay music "behind the cut" an acceptable interpretation of Auriea's rule? I don't browse the site via categories, I just browse "all recent posts," so I run into music that would otherwise be hidden.

Edit: I also want to add that maybe this is simply me not understanding the new blog system... Sticking out tongue
Alecsander's picture

Laruna- I'm quite sure

Laruna-

I'm quite sure 'under the cut is cool' is not a valid interpretation since all of my music was under the cut at the time the change was implemented and Auriea (or someone with admin powers) modified my blogs to remove the auto-play before I had a chance to do it myself.
Pegasicorn's picture

I think putting music "under

I think putting music "under the cut" is a loophole people found.

I support this... When I'm

I support this...
When I'm browsing blogs, I actually listen to everyone's music.
I will usually leave the blog page if it has an invisible player. =(

I know a lot of my old bios

I know a lot of my old bios STILL have the Auto-play Music on them (Because I'm honestly not in the mood to go through ALL of the players I've created for them and I'm a lazy bish XD) in my RECENT posts most of my music isn't on Auto-play.

For me, I honestly don't care about if something autoplays or not, it doesn't bother me all that much (Especially since a lot of the time I find a lot of songs I ADORE on the music players) but I understand how others would find it annoying. The only thing I find truly annoying is that sometimes the certain choices will SLOW DOWN my computer and lag it out @@;;;;;;;;;

And I've seen a few of those invisible players around. Which makes me go wtf? Why is there MUSIC but no player D=

Either or, I'm neutral on the matter since I don't care which way but I can understand the concerns for it. And for those who haven't seen the particular post about it...

{X}

It's still on the front page but you'd need to scroll down to see it. But Auriea did mention it and I've been leaning towards following what's been said there XD (Even though sometimes I do forget *sighs*)
Innisen's picture

I myself listen to music all

I myself listen to music all the time. If there's a music player I might stop my winamp and play the music on the site. Not if there's some really good song playing, then I wait till it ends before listening the music on the site.

But if there's autoplay I tend to shut it down quickly. Unless it sounds really good. But usually it just mixes up with whatever I listen to and it annoys me. If I can't turn it off I close the page.

Please let the reader choose wether there is music or not.
If you can't confuse people with your intelligence, amaze them with your bull****.

Uhm... I'd like to remind

Uhm... I'd like to remind everyone that autoplaying music isn't allowed in the summary section of the blogs, as that is what is displayed when viewing by section/categories. It isn't allowed because if everyone does that, it's just noise when you look at the category pages because there's 10+ players playing all at once. That is what the problem was and was what Auriea said was not allowed, and I quote:

Quote:
Someone pointed out to me, and I agree, that it can be really unpleasant to browse blogs when there is music in posts that automatically starts playing. If there are more than one of these, in the "Biography" blog section for example, It quickly becomes a cacophony! So, I ask you to please set all your music tracks to NOT play unless someone presses the PLAY button on the player.

Autoplaying music in the 'read more' section of the blog; that's not "not allowed", because it is undercut and therefore doesn't play when viewing sections.

The invisible players do annoy me, but I have no problem hitting pause if the music is auto-playing and the player is visible. I do understand it can be annoying for those who have limited bandwidth and a not-so-fast computer, however, but you can't please everyone! =)

Don't worry I've been making

Don't worry Smiling I've been making sure that all my music is not in autoplay

It does get annoying how people aren't following the rules >.<

Oh, Dag. Thanks for clearing

Oh, Dag. Thanks for clearing that up!
It just seems the auto-play thing is personal choice, then. I think I will keep mine off, however, I do know it's annoying to be listening to other music just to have it mangled. D:
I do not have a big problem with hitting pause, but I would advise against the invisible players, that just forces me to close the blog. :c

Well I do that, obviously

Well I do that, obviously under the cut. And I use a invisible player - yes it may annoy me sometimes, (when I am editing and I preview it, it plays twice) but now, as you can have noticed if you use Mixpod, your player has to accept video format for music with video. Which surely is annoying.

Though I am accepting changing it if someone suggests me another music player hoster thingie?

Auto-playing music is going

Auto-playing music is going to lessen the amount of people who visit your page.
And you can see invisible music players will lessen it even more.
If you don't like having the video showing, there is a player that hides the video portion unless you click to have it show. Like the one I use on my updates page. That's my workaround to the "videos must be in the music player" rule they have now.
Or, there is the coding to change the dimensions so just the pause button is showing. I've seen it done.

Extra thing: Putting the music "under the cut" to me is just a loophole. But think of this: most people don't browse the blogs via the category sections. Because of how this site is set up now, many people are looking at everything through the "recent posts" section. There is no "under the cut" there. You click the title, you see the whole blog. No warning if it's not in the title.

The least that can be done, is putting a warning in the title, so that if people are listening to their own music, they can pause it. Or they'll know why their computer decided to freeze up/lag after clicking to go to your page.
But I don't mean something like "AMW", "AMPW", or any other acronym. Not everyone knows what this means, since it's not a common abbreviation.

(I'm not trying to personally attack anyone. I'm just suggesting how to be more considerate.)
