When people have established characters they usually roleplay them together and if the characters get along very well sometimes the players decide that their characters make a good couple.
Finding a mate is not a requirement in the game, so there is no need or rush. Most characters have no mate.

you can find someone here in the community if you'd like to, even though this is not necessary! i mean there is no real purpose of finding a mate in this game, if only just for fun of it
As the creators rightly state, 'there is no goal in the Forest'. Finding a mate is simply something you may consider. Jezara, for example, has taken an interest in a particular deer, who I cannot contact. They will probably,though, remain as firm friends. It doesn't matter if you can't find a mate. Just play the game freely, don't limit yourself to one goal.
