Antagonists and Tips!

Qanat's picture
WAAAH i'm nERVOUS PUTTING THIS UP. q>q
I'M SURE I'LL THINK OF MORE TO SAY IN A BIT. And as people offer more opinions! I'll also clean this up and add a glossary..
But as ofnow!

OMG ALSO TO POINT OUT, 'Antagonist' and 'Protagonist' are used loosely when up against each other. It's more just... 'your attacking character versus their (possibly) innocent target'
-

[ We'll start with saying, I'm not, by any means some 'GREAT PLAYER' of antagonists. Or protagonists. Or anything tbh. But I've had a few years of experiences that could be worth sharing!
None of the things mentioned are to put anyone on blast. If you've played a character who does anything in the below lists, I'm not calling you out. And I don't mean to offend, I hope I don't! Tell me if I do. uvu My writing can come off as sardonic to abrasive sometimes. It's A WHOOPSIE.
Nothing I say should be taken as law. Anything I write is a mix of my experience, what I've seen and the experiences of people I've spoken to, or observed! Feel free to criticize or offer a different perspective. I have my thoughts but my mind is oPEN.
Honestly this whole thing would benefit A LOT through the opinions of others. I've never been good with lists. Or explaining myself sigh

Tell me if you'd like anything further added maybe! My memory is very bad sigh q>q hepl me
I feel I covered most of the masterlist (here) but I might need to put more.. in detail.. fack

Be prepared to read 'antagonist' and 'baddy' 200000000 times ]

A PORTION OF POSSIBLY PROBLEMATIC PREDICAMENTS !
(which are not covered in the type categories)

- 'IGNORING'
I've noticed a universal annoyance or confusion with Antagonists who begin to 'walk' away from violence while characters are charging, stabbing, jabbing, biting, running at them. I think this is often viewed as the Antag's player ignoring the interaction and as a result, ignoring the result of their antagonist's behavior. 'I can have my character rip yours up but now i'm bored so i'm ignoring you'.
This isn't always the case, but it has been often enough that people grow uncomfortable when they see it and have no proof of otherwise. Be careful to give off the right impressions!
Maybe make your baddy limp (slow walk, trot, slow walk, trot), turn to fight them off and stumble away again.
If you think someone is ignoring you, contact them or simply walk away.
If you think someone might think you're ignoring them and you care, contact them.
If you can!
Communication does wonders when handling these types of characters. Things turn sour when people draw their characters away from an interaction because they think they're not being taken seriously. Opinions form, things get uncomfortable.

- SAFE SPOTS.
I've also experienced and known confusion when an antagonist comes in, wreaks havoc, then hides in the pond. For many aquatic antagonists, this is entirely in character!
But it's often frustrating when it happens over and over and over. People think they have a fight on their hands, they are attacked, they respond, then suddenly none of their characters get to make their own move. The bad guy has eATEN tHEIR bABIE'S lEG OH NO then they sit out of reach. At times, they don't react even when the victims jump in the fight them because it's a 'safe place', or maybe they've gone AFK. Nobody can tell! Then, sometimes they sneak out go after someone again when people begin to get distracted.
I'm not calling anyone out, or saying this is the 'wrong' or bad way to do things! It's rarely an OOC scheme to win, and ICly, makes a lot of sense for a swimmin' baddy with a good plan.
But I am saying I've seen many, many many people quickly grow a little tired because they're not sure if they're being ignored.
tHIS IS TRICKY.. The baddy could be in the pond because their player needs to go for a bathroom break a phone call, talking to someone, ect. Everyone needs to run off sometimes! That said, there's a measure of distrust I sense in the community when it comes to negative interaction, PRIMARILY with characters without biographies! It might be good to temporarily log the character out or 'listen' and just leave them still. People seem to know you have to run off when that stance is held.
If they have a bio, it could be good to leave a note!

- TAKING/GIVING BREAKS.
It's also proven to become overwhelming when so many characters with ill intents pop up at once. Waves and waves. After the third wave, it seems to be a good deal less fun for both the characters, and the players behind them unless it's plotted out. This isn't universal! Some may love it. But if you plan on putting a baddy in, it might be more enjoyable for both the others, and you, to wait a bit between the arrival of others.
You character isn't just 'ANOTHER ONE', but a 'new' one. They can make their own impression and not just ride on the coattails of the prior.
Of course these aren't rules! You do what feels right.

PASSIVE AGGRESSION
If you aren't happy with how your character is being received, writing veiled comments on their biography does the opposite of help. dISCUSSION DISCUSS DUSSUSSISDSIDSDISD!!

- Racist, Homophobic and Bigot characters.
This I hadn't thought of but someone asked me to cover it!
It is OKAY to play a character who is racist, homophobic, or hateful. I don't have a lot of experiences with playing these types myself, though there has been a few chars of mine that were internally homophobic- towards themselves.
Regardless, when it's clearly just your character, this is fine.
IF YOU HANDLE THIS CORRECTLY.
Be careful not to justify or defend your character's behavior and play those traits of theirs with consideration and grace.
Try not to give every single one of your characters these beliefs. It gets a lil suspect, s o i ' v e h e a r d.
THAT SAID.. your character having these beliefs does not inherently make them an antagonist. It can be a driving force in their background, though. I certainly wouldn't try to play my racist character as a hero, however. KEEP THIS IN MIND. SO DELICATE

- ANTAGONISTS AND REAL DISABILITIES, SYNDROMES, CONDITIONS, ECT
This is a very touchy, very delicate thing. Some people believe that you shouldn't be able to portray someone with a disability or condition as a bad person. i dON'T AGREE personally. Anyone can be horrible. The thing you have to be careful of, is being sure that your character is 'horrible' because that's who they are, not because of those things they're 'suffering' from. That said, there are illnesses, or disorders that bring out more extreme reactions in people that may lead to or contribute to their negative actions! There's truth in that. Even so, none of that means anything if someone winds up offended.
Please, please be very careful, very, very informed and very willing to listen to others if they're not comfortable with how you're portraying something that you yourself haven't experienced.
I personally, to be safe, don't portray any real mental, emotional, anythingigngAL, in my characters. They're all fictional and based in my headworld. This is a simple way of just not offending anyone because it's literally not a thing go away shh
If you have aaaaany doubt that you're 100% confident in how you portray your character, I'd recommend not giving them a real, diagnosed.. brain-involved-anything until doing more research. If you're trying it out but not confident, perhaps don't write it on their biography quite yet!
Consider, is it necessary to their story? Why do you want them to have these ailments?

- OBLIGATION TO INTERACT.
If those reacting to a baddy are greatly bothered and no longer want to respond- maybe they never did- there's nothing wrong with not interacting further. I know it's a bit irksome because sometimes your character's friends are continuing to fight while you don't want your character to be part of it. But it's better to make up a reason for as to why your character can no longer react, than push yourself to play them and hate it the whole time. Nobody can tell you that your character is hurt.

- SIZE =/= WIN
Your antagonist's size only means so much. There are plenty of members of the forest as large as them or larger who may or may not try to take them down if given a reason.
Depending on the type of character you're playing, they may benefit being larger or smaller than the most! If they're going to be doing enough to make a lot of enemies, it would do them well to be large n' in charge. If they're the slick and sly type, maybe being medium and lithe is a good idea.
Either way, no matter their size or speed, do not powerplay. Take fair damage and discuss, take other opinions into account if you're unsure!

- TEXTUAL POWERPLAYING
Be careful when writing updates not to write things as definite.
Attempted to tear off her enemy's tail.
VS.
Tore off her enemy's tail.

You can write in your updates what your character tried to do. It's up to the other side to decide if their character was able to dodge any attacks! But it's a good way to give others an idea of what kind of damage they could be facing! It's like a partybag of scars. WHO DOESN'T LOVE SCARS

- TAKING DAMAGE.
Some bad guys can fight against 45000 characters for 40 minutes. Some people find this unfair, some people don't! I find this is often a case of people not wanting to be forced to log their Antagonist off, but the Protagonists not letting up on the chase. Antag player wishes it would stop, but continues to play ICly because IC is what tHEY DO. So it ends up looking like they're playing some amazing, powerhouse who can take a deadly beating and keep running in the end.
-- Other times, it can be a case of facing 5 large deer for a half hour, and the bad guy comes off with some owwies. I don't always chalk this up to people powerplaying. Everyone imagines the scenario differently in their mind. If you aren't happy with the damage someone has taken, poke them about it! If you don't want to do that, adjust your character's (goodguy or badguy) damage accordingly. No harm in it, nobody has to be upset at the end of the day.

- PERSISTENCE.
Never letting up!
Worst case scenario, the moment your baddy takes a chomp outta sweet baby Brunhilda's kneecap, it's possible they'll be beaten until they're unable to move enough to hurt anyone else, froM WHAT I'VE SEEN lately. Not always the case, but possible! Sometimes they're chased down until they leave. This can be overwhelming and upsetting as the antagonist-player. You bring in your new guy, he does what his personality dictates and then suddenly you just can't play him for the rest of the day because he'll constantly have someone chewing on his ass. Next time you log him on and he blinks at a fawn, his skull is karate chopped in four quarters and from then on he's kicked by 3000 deer until he becomes a pile of jelly. NOT FUN.
But this is also remedied by contacting those involved with hounding them, and saying 'He or she won't be going after any more deer today but I'd still like to play them IF!'
You can ask for people to back their characters off, though asking them to oocly reel in their characters might not always be received well. Everyone reacts differently.
In part, it would be good to count on consideration from others, so they let you enjoy playing your character. On the other hand, if you play a character who kills babies, you are going to have to accept that majority of the forest will hate their guts. Asking someone to OOCly have their character back off might bring up an argument. But for those upset, remember! Your characters were only affected by this Hunter because you consented, reacted, and took that development. You're not obligated to, and that Hunter's player should be able to respect being asked to back off. If this goes both ways, you should be able to respect being asked to back off as well! At least after a good, deserved smackin'.
Hopefully both sides respect each other.

- TEF VS BADGUYS CULTURE
The recent forest Culture Shift! When I first joined and up until maybe a year ago, predators could prowl, attack, get a good old fight then break off and have that fight end. Both sides leave to clean their wounds and tend to the injured.
Recently, it's not so easy! When hit with a large wave of predator after predator, baddy after baddy, the forest often gets worked up into 'kill the bad before they kill us mode'. THIS IS IC, of course. It becomes overwhelming and tiring for the characters when day in and day out, a giant, predatory force or two throw themselves at the young, the old, the weary, ect. I think this is most common when the 'predator' is persistent and isn't chased off the first few times, looking for other victims.
Otherwise, it's sheer numbers. People see a predator and become inspired! They make one and put it in the day after predator #1 has attacked. Someone else is inspired, a new predator arrives. The forest residents go into extermination mode for their own safety and sanity. In a way it's really nice to see how the forest has become concerned with the safety of one another. ON THE OTHER HAND, it's hard to play the toughies sometimes.
What can we do about this? A FEW THINGS. IT DEPENDS.

THAT SAID,
My experience and opinions are going to be under those above pretenses! Though I'll also bring up a few things about that afterwards, especially regarding specific types of baddies. SO HOLD TIGHT FOR NOW OK

We'll close that bit with the obvious- in my experience, the enjoyment one has playing an antagonist has A LLLLLLLLOT to do with the way the forest reacts to said antagonist, both ICly and OOCly. These interactions and reactions can make or break these characters, but responsibilities lie on both sides. How you portray and play your character has a lot to do with how they're received.

Now getting into types!

Types of Antagonists

The Hunter.

Common in the forest overall, from what I've seen!
These are characters who aren't put in purely to cause trouble, but have a measure of personality and drive to them. Sometimes they just happen to hunt for food, or enjoy the sport of hunting others. Good old sociopathy! Or a different (fictional) culture? A mental state? To put it simply, these aren't just put in to make the forest 'more exciting'. Someone wants a character they can play often and enjoy!

In my experience!:

Both the player of the antagonist and the players of the populace seems to enjoy these characters when..
They have dimension to them. A personality, a driving force for why they do what they do. It doesn't have to be crazily in depth from the get-go! But often it's a little more fun when there's a 'life' behind the actions. Maybe they only hunt when hungry, maybe they have a sick relative inside or outside of the forest to feed and they're desperate! Maybe they had no idea this forest was full of sapient deer even. Or maybe they're a pack of hunters who care only for themselves and others like them.

I've seen things crash and burn for these Hunters in a number of ways..
- When they go after a fawn, or the small and weak, that instantly puts up a very large barrier for future interactions. Lately the forest doesn't tolerate fawn beaters/eaters. I don't think most of it ever did but oh boy now you eat a baby, you die real quick.
-- Regardless, if you wanted your character to make friends with anyone other than like-minded individuals, you'll have some trouble.
BUT NOT ALL IS LOST DW

REDEMPTION, BABY
If your brainbaby started out as a hunter, you grew to love them and wish you could play them without negative interactions as their whole shtick..
For Hunters, this is a real possibility!
Maybe your Hunter has a character arc. They learn, they no longer hunt sapient deer. Maybe they feed on the squirrels, frogs and fish.
Or maybe they still hunt 'nameless' (and I don't mean nameless played by new/guest characters. I mean nameless played by nobody. Like.. it's said but not acted out. dON'T bE mEAN TO neW PEOPLE) deer! Perhaps you have a friend who can log on a nameless and have them run and fight. Your baddy still gets to eat, you still get to act it out but he also gets to have friends. I mean, then again, some people love those nameless babes. (Indigo would be mad)
Maybe they don't want to be hated, but continue hunting deer behind closed doors. Nobody sees it, it doesn't have to be done ingame but it's a good start to a little mini character plot. Guilt, conflict, betrayal, WAOW
- Maybe they become so guilt ridden they don't eat at all anymore. Others are bound to see that as a sacrifice of self. They show remorse. Maybe make some understanding friends.
-- With a change of heart and actions- maybe just actions (wink wink Ioten), you can have a character who had a bloody beginning, become someone you can play freely without the worry of a mobbing.

I don't wanna redeem them, I just wanna play them gdi..
I FEEL YOU. This is tough. I don't think a character who regularly tries to murder and eat people for the sake of sweet numnums is going to get far, interaction wise. That said, if you stick with them for a while, there's bound to be more to them than just that facet that you enjoy! They could make friends with other 'unsavory' individuals and form a little clan. After all, maybe they don't like the goodies either.

The SpICER UPPER.

Pretty much what it sounds like!
A fighty character put in the forest to the forest to 'liven it up'. They don't often last long, or aren't very commonly seen. Sometimes they turn into something more, and become more regular! While there's less to be said about them due to simplicity, they're appreciated and enjoyed when played with consideration. Often overwhelming when they come in the wake of others, on the same day or while a lot of characters targeted are still recovering!

The Aggressor.

So these guys don't often fly into the forest with the pure and obvious intent to hunt, or kill. Maybe they like brawling! Maybe they've got a horrid temper. Maybe they're possessive, want what they think is theirs and they'll stop at nothing to have it. Maybe they're easily insulted but very prideful. Maybe they have no pride, so a little jab at them makes them fly off the handle, or maybe seeing people hurt makes 'em real giddy.
General 'aggressor' term is more.. a highly violent character with depth behind that reason for violence past hunger. It's such a broad spectrum that it isn't easy to describe.

Both the player of the antagonist and the players of the populace seems to enjoy these characters for what they are when..
- Effort is put into their personalities. As with all antagonists (and characters in general) if played with respect and consideration, these guys have are a lot of fun to play and interact with. And it's slim chances that, so long as they don't stomp on a fawn or pregnant lady, they'll be hounded and driven out of the forest. They'll likely make friends should they treat those friends right, and many conflicts (that are fun to act out) can arise from that!

I've seen these characters crash and burn when..
- They take a step up from their violence and turn it towards children. It is ENTIRELY possible for a character who targets children to continue to be enjoyable to play. However, there's often a hell of a backlash that takes a time to die down and a reputation that follows them. If this OOCly upsets you, you might feel the need to pull away from the character because it stresses you.
You need to be able to roll with the punches! It's okay for IC characters to hate yours! Their players will love them if they're well done.
-- They take a step up from their violence to something more extreme. This is gonna be covered later though, HOLD TIGHT

The Manipulator.

These are some of my favourites! Seldom violent, OR often violent, they might put on a sweet face, or a friendly one until angered. They might put that face on until they just don't feel like it any longer. Maybe they pull the strings behind the scenes or trick others into fighting. Or they hurt others but convince the masses that they're innocent, or the other had it coming. Maybe they con and lie, but they're so seemingly benign that nobody can prove it. They're fun, they sNEAk.

Both the player of the antagonist and the players of the populace seems to enjoy these characters for what they are when..
- They're well done. They're considerate OOCly. Simple stuff! Otherwise, they're something to admire for people who like that type.

I've seen these characters crash and burn when..
- Things don't go the player's way, and it's difficult to swallow.
If a lie your character told is outed but you'd had fun keeping it, it might ruin a good bit of the fun. Make sure the people you're interacting with are on the same page as you, if you want things to go a certain way! Don't expect your manipulator to seem innocent and 'win' forever! It's possible, but you can only go so far, depending on how malicious they get.
-- The Manipulator screws another character over and their player didn't agree to this all beforehand. For example, Thanos interacts with Lucy. Lucy now knows Thanos' secret of GOLDEN ICHOR BLOOD OOO. Wendingo might not want Than's secret to just get out there and be known to all. If I have Lucy spread it without discussing with Wendingo first, that's a dick move!
Be considerate, discuss things, everyone's comfortable.

The Abuser.
WARNING, mentions of rape below. A tough subject but one I think needs bringing up.
This is where things get difficult. This character type can have a bunch of other traits, but when it comes down to it what sticks out most to the population is a tendency to hurt friends, loved ones, partners, ect. If not that, the abuse of strangers spreads far and fast from character to character.

I'll say right now that you can play a character who physically, emotionally and verbally abuses other characters successfully. You can enjoy the interaction this character gets, and offers. Sometimes people want this sort of character to run into theirs! Nothing wrong with that.

But I'm going to be honest when I say I have never, ever ONCE seen a character attempt, succeed in or threaten rape and continue to be a breeze to play and deal with if what they've done goes public ICly.
And I don't at all think that the 'give them a chance and back off' applies to these types.
This isn't to punish their player! Unless that player handles it horribly, knowingly, they don't deserve backlash by default. We don't punish the writers of books with characters who are rapists.
But to tell people to 'back off and give a rapist character a chance' OOCly, can come off as apologetic or belittling of the crime. I totally understand what they're getting at- they still want to play their character! And I know it's fictional! But this subject matter is very, very extreme and all too commonly, personally offensive to people. So I understand the other side as well.
I do honestly believe the longevity of your character, no matter how beloved to yourself and others, will be effected if they're known as a rapist.
I am very very willing to hear other opinions on this, but like I said, it's not something I've seen go well in the many cases that have happened. All kinds of players, with all kinds of characters, it goes downhill. This is one of the few things I can't say I find tasteful to ask people to have their characters back away from. But that's only my opinion!
THAT SAID. This isn't the center of the post so i hope it doesn't turn into a discussion on this purely sigh...

Both the player of the antagonist and the players of the populace seems to enjoy these characters for what they are when..
- It's done tastefully. Any form of abuse can be uncomfortable or hurtful for people to read about. But when it isn't fetishized, explicitly, graphically mentioned without warning, or OOCly justified, joked about or treated with insensitivity, people often respect it as creative development. Put warnings in your updates or on your character's page! I like to put warnings in the updates themselves so that people can still enjoy my bios without having to worry about seeing something they don't wanna see!
-- It's done covertly. Your character may be very unkind their spouse. Are they going to be popular among the forest residents if that goes public? Probably not very. They'll likely make a few friends but they won't be known as a great person by most. If you don't mind this, it's fine!
The character may beat their children. The same applies as above.
These things, if kept between your character and the character of a trusted player, or just a player who wants their character to have this development, serve as heavy development that can have a number of meaningful outcomes.
- The abuse is kept non-sexual.

I've seen these characters crash and burn when..
- Abuse goes public and the player can't take the IC reaction. If you choose to play a scum bag, whether they have a horrible past to 'justify' it or not, they're going to be treated like one. DO NOT take offense if your character is hated. Do not play this kind of character if you can't handle the backlash.
-- Abuse was meant to be covert, and ICly went public without the player's knowledge.
Can ruin a hell of a plot. Keep on the same page, know who you're RPing with.
--- These themes were handled insensitively or fetishized. DooOOOo be soooo damn careful. This offense reaches far, far outside IC. People likely won't hate your guys but this is a surefire way to make people very uncomfortable.

I'm in no way trying to dissuade anyone from taking this kind of plot or character on! But I think people are far more sensitive to this than most realize. It becomes very difficult to discuss when issues arise. You have to have a thick skin and fair communication skills if you fear people are thinking ill of you! That and a- it'sthemagicword- lot of consideration for others.

A CLOSING TIP! eue
Your character can be absolutely horrible, the worst of the worst, the scariest, most intimidating being, without ever laying a hand on another. Remember this! Strive for originality and don't default to the worst acts possible to make them 'bad'. They don't have to be crazy, violent or angry.
Some characters can make your heart beat the second you see their pictogram ingame!
It takes more than acts of violence to make them formidable or something to fear- even to take seriously. With so many gigantic protectors in the forest, what makes your antagonist unique? What makes her scary? What makes him something to bat an eye at?
Most everyone can die and be reborn nowadays. Why do they need to worry about your character?
Consider this!

"Please, please be very

"Please, please be very careful, very, very informed and very willing to listen to others if they're not comfortable with how you're portraying something that you yourself haven't experienced."

Thank you for this. Sorry to post again, but this is one of THE most important things I think to keep in mind when you're making... any character outside of your reference. It's important as a writer to leave your comfort zone, but make sure that you're not making others uncomfortable, especially with mental illness and the likes.

8'I As someone who's quite ill, it means the world to me when a writer taking on something new is willing to take critique/pointers from someone with the disability they might be trying to portray. So much respect for those of you who do take that into account.
