A Return To The Forest

I suppose on The Endless Forest I go by Tais now. Can't remember why I chose this specific name for my return but I'll keep it as this is the first account I've created since my departure from the game many years ago. This game is something I'd like to continue to be apart of going into the future as this place truly is uniquely special. Hopefully, you all will have me rejoin in this big, beautiful forest of ours. I look forward to it, greatly.

Please feel free to reach out as I'd love to meet each and every one of you. Perhaps, you can give me advice/feedback regarding the state of the community today? Feel free to ask me anything though I'd prefer to keep my outside identity vague in terms of specifics as I think it complements the whole 'deer' experience. I'm normally not opposed to sharing. Thank you for reading this far.

Update! I believe I chose this name after connecting with my specific new pictogram. I just found a name I liked that I felt fit well in giving my pictogram some sort of alias/meaning.

Welcome back,

Welcome back, Tais.

"Perhaps, you can give me advice/feedback regarding the state of the community today?"
In the forest, it's become common that people leave their characters sitting/sleeping and afk or tab out for long periods of time, using platforms like toyhouse or discord for communication. So if the game looks dead at any point in time to you, it's due to that.
It does have its active moments, though, and there still are deer who pay attention/move around. Just a matter of time of the day, catching that.

The community site may also look quiet due to the platforms and timezone issues I mentioned above, but there are still people checking it.
Besides, I'm personally invested in restoring it to its former glory (due to nostalgia. and due to me not accepting of those new platforms anyway)

Lastly, I may be somewhat similar to you as I don't like letting people into my personal space.
But when it comes to the community and the forest, I'm fairly welcoming. So feel free to hit me up if you have more tef-related questions, any problems, etc., or would like some quiet/overly active company in the forest.

That's a unique way of treating your pictogram, I dig it. Your picto's 'true name' is 4Mak6, by the way. Pretty distinct, too, haha.

I loved reading this reply,

I loved reading this reply, by the way. Thank you for all this insight. I'm curious as to how you deciphered my pictogram? (As well as, how I would go about pronouncing it.) I'd love to learn any lore/information surrounding TEF so I can truly immerse myself.

Also, is there an official Discord server? Or one you'd recommend I join?

'True names' concept was

'True names' concept was discovered by Unplugged, here.
People tend to invent their own ways of interpreting that sequence. Mine is 1KRmw. I guess it doesn't make sense as a word, but could make for a neat graffiti, the mw part, at least.

AlisonRobin did some more research on pictograms' true names (the blog seems to be broken now, sadly).
She also looked into the forest's coordinates system, which is a fun read.

I'll link more lore pages to you when(if) I remember them. For now, I can suggest you check the player-made info hub, in case you haven't yet.

There is a player-run Discord server, but I can't help you find it, hope somebody else does. I never really been there, I just silently judge it. Sticking out tongue

That was my deer who was white and joined you for some deer-watching, by the way. Had a good time, thank you for the company.

So very cool. Glad to see

So very cool. Glad to see such player-made dedication on the official forum. I just joined the Discord but I can say I definitely want to prioritize using the actual forum. I come to the forest to get away from the usual. (I.e., like Discord.)

The white deer with the orange dots on its antlers?! I do hope so. Not sure how you recognized it was me. Also what made you choose that distinct look of yours? Not gonna lie, it made me smile when I ran into you again and you sneezed your main coat back on. A very pleasant surprise!

Good, that's good to

Good, that's good to hear.

Yeah, it was me. I check the map often, whenever I'm on tefc or inforest.

Well, my previous look was grey ram horns and a black coat, so for my next one I chose the opposite color.
But I wanted to stick to the 'theme' I had in mind for both of those looks, so it has some black and red, as well.

When my deer wears all red and the eyeless mask, that's the indicator of me going afk for a while. I changed my plans back then.
And didn't regret it, all that action was fun. And I got you to meet my good friend Cu, and these sweet people.
They're all great company, just letting you know.

Oo. Very stylish, I see. I've

Oo. Very stylish, I see. I've yet to figure out what I'd like to go for look-wise. Very hard to choose a favorite since they're all so stunning but I suppose whatever set pieces find me, will find me. I'd like to opt for something feminine (by human standards) and a doe that is motherly-like. Normally, I opt for strong masculinity but I think my chosen alias unintentionally being feminine is a opportunity I'd like to take inspiration from.
The meaning of Tais is supposedly along the lines of "beloved/beautiful/divine/goddess". The Origin being Greek. In Old Irish it carries a lot more connotations like "damp/moist/humid/soft/smooth/tender/mild/gentle/kind/compassionate/easy/weak/indulgent/feeble/spiritless/timid".

It was great meeting them, as well. Hopefully, I made a good first impression.

Hello there! Welcome back to

Hello there! Welcome back to the forest Smiling
It was nice meeting you yesterday with Uitleger, hopefully we will meet again and have more fun around ^^

I'll help you with the Fan

I'll help you with the Fan set when we cross next, if noone's done that by then.
"whatever set pieces find me, will find me"
Yes, that's how it usually goes. And I see. As for my deer, he adheres to no specifics regarding age, sex, or looks.
The set is simply to make it easier for people to recognize him. I rather like the freedom.

I guess set pieces can be interpreted differently in different cultures/by different people when it comes to masculinity/femininity. I wonder what you'll end up choosing.
I can admire your sticking by the unexpected development (the meanings of the name).

There's a tef stereotype I've always found funny, even though I'm guilty of it, myself: people seeing characters with Noh horns as females. Those are fun horns, so it's a shame, really.

Is your deer going to be an In Character or an Out Of Character?

Haha, this place can be too chaotic for first impressions. I sure hope, too] Ninja'd by Hauta.

The Fan was a set I first

The Fan was a set I first considered. Before the doe idea. Maybe I'll consider still going for it, for her? It's different than what I expected for a doe but maybe that's the fun of it? I'd probably go for any set pieces that best fit her definition(s). Any suggestions? I'd love your perspective. Perhaps, I may opt for the smaller deer size (mushroom circle magic). Not sure if that magic lasts and if all the usual sets can be applied.

Noh horns being feminine is actually something I associated pretty quickly, as well. That's pretty funny.

That's good question! I'd love to do in-character, actually.

Pst, I believe you missed

Pst, I believe you missed Hauta's comment greeting you, right above my previous one.

I offered help with the Fan one before you changed your mind about that part. Sticking out tongue Edited comments can be hard to follow and timely react to, for me at least.
Perspective is gonna be difficult to come by, since when I came back to the forest, I decided I'd clear my mind and have a fresh, stereotype-free look at the spells.
The Fan set, though, I could see a Yin vibe coming from it (with the downturned horns, the 'shadow mask' on the face, and the stripes glowing against the earthly-colored coat), which would fit some of those meanings you listed.

But my actual advice would be something that I did about my first deer: I played him in the forest, and as I had him interact with various characters, details like his name, personality, appearance and story came in their own time. Maybe some of this approach will work for you, maybe not. As long as you have fun. For me, there's a good deal of fun in simply discovering what my characters are.

The minideer spell is permanent on adults, yeah, and all the sets work fine with it. The only catch is you have to use a trick each time you log on or load the set, to make it show up.
