Magic and Abilities
Trained by his father in the arts of combat in youth, he has honed his strength, speed, and agility. His (non-supernatural) weapons include his tines, hooves, teeth, and tail. One of his main strengths lies in his ability to balance, despite his rather tall stature. However, he lacks the cunning of the more experienced fighters.
Due to his parentage, Ryuu has inherited a few supernatural abilities.
Mind-reading: The first of his abilities made apparent. His whiskers are the key. It's an ability he once could not control, but now it is an ability he must will to use. He will no longer use it lightly, and only when permission is given or there is an urgent need. Ryuu is sensitive to psychic entities, especially.
Healing: Ryuu has dedicated more time to this ability than others. Over time, he has mastered repairing most any kind of injury. However, he has not yet learned to remove scars. If his patients had broken bones, it is common for them to still feel pain and swelling and almost guaranteed for larger breaks. The greater the injury he must heal, the more exhausting the effort is.
Umbrakenesis: This is an ability he often forgets, and is also the least practiced, as it has always been the most dangerous for him to utilize. He can, by extending his own shadow to the shadow of the target, lift something about the size of a boulder for a short time.
The Price: For an unknown reason, Ryuu inherited his father's curse. The Curse of the Dragon. It is the source for the bulk of his abilities. In this curse, anger or distress can easily give way to wrath and hatred, and he will relentlessly pursue anyone he deems an enemy. After the rage has passed, he will often collapse from the exhaustion of it and whatever he may have done while under the power of the Curse. He hates this part of himself, and is the source for many of his insecurities or vulnerability to them.
The Union: With the help of a human outside the forest, learned to accept and control the power within him. He recognized that the "beast" is and always has been an indivisible part of himself, and he opened himself up to the dragon within. Now has the ability to maintain full awareness when in a "dragon state", though it is still extremely exhausting and challenging. While the risk of being accidentally set off is much lower, it does still exist.

Indeed, Ryuu hadn't noticed Saix sitting down next to him, only jolting at the familiar voice and turning to face him with wide eyes. Ryuu smiled wide, though it wasn't totally absent of the negative feelings he had been sorting through earlier. He hugged the blue stag tightly with his long neck.
"Saix!"

While for the moment he had little to say, he was just fine with the idea of being with his friend and companion again.
"I should apologize. It's been too long since I've stopped by, and it seems time's been escaping us lately."

Holy crap I am flattered.
Holy crap I am flattered. >//< Unfortunately, the lack of comments is probably a direct reflection of my absence in-forest. My internet connection is a joke for a 21st century American college town ("high speed" but shared by way too many people). If I'm lucky I can connect adequately after half an hour of opening and re-opening several windows of TEF at a time. And this inability of being able to get in forest has probably created a habit of me no longer attempting to get in forest. And when I do have good internet access, I'm usually in the company of people I want to spend time with. Hopefully things will improve when everyone leaves for the summer and STOPS EATING BANDWIDTH.

Oh, I'm serious. I always liked you, and I remember liking him from the moment I first found him. He's matured quite well as you have, and I really love and admire what he's developed into (despite knowing as little as I do, admittedly).
I admit, I can't help but think 'kirin' (or qilin, depending on one's cup of tea) when I see him, though I know his species says otherwise. I do intend that as a heavy compliment, however. Every other character I've come into awareness of on here who's claimed to be a kirin/have something to do with kirins/resemble a kirin has made me :\. He's the first I would readily accept as such a being in entirety [in the sense that I believe he could do them justice in total, where others might only do so in part] that I've found here, even though he isn't one.
I honestly assumed as much about the absence of comments; that's almost always been the case with the good ones here. I'm sorry about your horrible Internet server. Hopefully it just fixes itself like magic (if one can't find a reason for that option's impossibility, there's not reason not to hope it happens!) and you have infinite access to anything you desire. Long story short, I understand. Despite that, he's still too well-designed to go unnoticed/without active attention, Forest or otherwise.

P.S. I loved him with the Koi Mask, I won't even lie. It's so silly looking, but I just love it so much. Plus, he may be just about the only one who could ever pull it off. Just saying.

I remember being pretty new around here and meeting you and your character. You have always been so nice to me and thank you for that ;; I won't lie, I'm pretty proud of how far Ryuu has come. There were times where his struggles seriously weighed me down, but I think he's managed to pull through. I have definitely changed along with him, too. It's been a ride for sure :')
I think "kirin" is totally fair, it's just that his mother's species is ambiguous even though she appears to be a "kirin" to some, while his father is clearly not a kirin. I feel less free to take liberty with the word "kirin" than I do with "dragon", probably because kirin is such a more specific mythical figure (not to say that freedom shouldn't ever be taken, I am just afraid to bastardize it, yanno?).
Ahhh, thank you for the well-wishes. Back at'cha C| I am really glad you feel that way about him. Makes me feel like he is worthwhile, and not just to me. And especially because someone who doesn't really have any direct interactions with him has said that. When I was in the process of creating him, I was overwhelmed with inspiration. I knew almost immediately what his form/shape would be like, but I agonized over the colors. I wanted him to resemble his parents while being able to stand out from them. Though, it's strange how much else about him just came so naturally. I'm so glad all that inspiration paid off in the long run. I dunno about other people, but so much of my inspiration goes to waste simply because I don't have anywhere to put it.

Not because I'm embarrassed or anything (that mysteriously stopped some time ago; occasionally I consider it, but for the most part I exist in a fairly stable, generally pleased state--it's nice), but because I'm given to not responding to comments for long periods of time and don't want to leave you hanging like that.
Oh, if we can even call that a character; but yes, you met me, at least. I try to be nice, on principal. "My father had taught me to be nice first, because you can always be mean later, but once you’ve been mean to someone, they won’t believe the nice anymore. So be nice, be nice, until it’s time to stop being nice, then destroy them." I normally don't quote, but that simultaneously spoke to me and amused me and I was only exposed to it recently.
I'm glad you're proud! You should be. I mean, as I said, I can't really know until I actually get to learning about him in detail (you'd think I'd do that about characters I like, but I'm just so good at procrastinating). That said, it will certainly continue to be a ride. It always is.
That explanation is totally legit. I can appreciate you not wanting to bastardize creatures who, by nature, require certain specifications to exist. If only everyone else, here and otherwise, shared your wisdom and initiative. Ah well, I can cope with misnomers if there are people like you to anchor to when others are being mad.
I know that exactly; my most recent character came to me in a split-second of realization. Sure, other more subtle aspects of him came over time--but, for the most part, I knew him from the second I "met" him. Only time that's happened to me. Pretty cool.
I love cross-breeding of character designs. Whenever I see it done well, I just wiggle. It's too great. I'm glad to see you did exactly that. I also love seeing where a character came from--it gives characters so much more depth when one can also explain the details of their origins.
I feel you there too. I actually started making these things I've been calling "personas" to counteract that. They're characters, technically, but they're generally one or two dimensional, made because I had one neat idea that I applied to a being, but not creative enough for me to feel okay with calling a fully fleshed out character. I sat down and wrote up nine of them in twenty minutes one day, and have added a few since then as they've come to me. I love it because it gives my creative ideas somewhere to go and actually have a chance to matter a little bit. (On top of that, my fiancé has a little storyline which requires mystical objects that his character seeks out, so that's where I put my creative ideas which don't relate to living things. I don't have one for human or other non-deer characters at this point, but I've always been less inspired with that crowd.) I'll eventually make a blog for all my creative concepts--OOCs, OCs, and Personas included--but, like I mentioned, I'm awesome at procrastinating.

I'm a sucker for crossing character designs too. My artistic ability limits me in actually bringing designs to life, but imagining them is so much fun and I can't help but stalk all the design blogs for them. For Ryuu I just had to take the opportunity to give him a dragon-like appearance. I think it serves to bring out his heritage well while being different from his parents all at once.
And with old characters that weren't so successful, I'm very reluctant to say "I will never play them again", simply because I want to keep that ability to express that bit of inspiration.
